Azerbaijan, located along the Great Silk Road, has long attracted travelers from around the world. Historically, visitors included famous writers, poets, scholars, and historians, with mentions even appearing in ancient writings by Herodotus, Strabo, and Claudius Ptolemy.
Today, Azerbaijan is gaining popularity again, and for good reason. Known as the "Land of Fire," it uniquely blends Eastern charm and mystery with European progress. It's a country where nine climatic zones coexist and ancient traditions intertwine beautifully with modern worldviews. Combine this with stunning natural beauty, legendary Caucasian hospitality, and delicious, diverse cuisine, and you still only have a faint idea of this extraordinary land.
To truly discover Azerbaijan, you must visit and experience it firsthand.
Facts and Figures
Azerbaijan lies in the eastern part of the South Caucasus along the Caspian Sea coast. With a population of 9.8 million people and covering an area of 86,600 square kilometers, it is the largest country in the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan boasts more than 7,500 natural, archaeological, architectural, and historical monuments. Its nickname "Land of Fire" comes from its ancient Zoroastrian (fire-worshipping) heritage, evident through ancient rock carvings, statues of deities, and temples. Modern Baku reflects this fiery heritage in its iconic Flame Towers.
"Paradise on Earth" – Quba

Azerbaijan's nature is incredibly diverse, featuring numerous rivers, mountain streams, spectacular waterfalls, dense forests, mineral springs, and mud volcanoes, along with abundant fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other natural treasures.
Most tourists visiting Azerbaijan for the first time start in Baku, the capital. However, for those eager to explore more, we highly recommend the picturesque Quba-Khachmaz region, located just 168 km from Baku, easily reachable within two hours.

Quba is situated on the northeastern slope of Shahdag Mountain in the Greater Caucasus, over 600 meters above sea level, near the Gudialchay river. The central city of Quba is famous for its historical landmarks, apple orchards, and exquisite carpets. The Russian writer Bestuzhev-Marlinsky once called it a "Paradise on Earth." French writer Alexandre Dumas visited, praising the area's natural beauty, hospitality, and cuisine, a visit echoed by his grandson 150 years later.
Over 100 rivers and streams flow through Quba, many with crystal-clear, drinkable water. Among the largest are Agchay, Garachay, Valvalachay, and Gudialchay. The famous Afurja Waterfall, a recognized natural monument of Azerbaijan, is located along Valvalachay, near a colony of griffon vultures listed in the national Red Book. Gachresh, a nearby location, is popular for relaxation amidst shady forests.
Gudialchay is the largest river, stretching 108 km and originating from the 3,000-meter-high peak of Tufandag. The unique stone arch bridge built in 1910 spans this river.
